Visit the mansion and fortress of Loevestein Castle. Situated at a unique spot in the Netherlands: the rivers Maas and Waal meet each other here and the province of Gelderland, Brabant and South-Holland touch. In this Dutch river landscape, knight Dire Loef from Horne built his castle, because of the strategic location. At that time, it was the perfect place to collect toll. Now it’s the perfect place for a day out!
With walls made of earth, double canals, a bomb free safehouse, munition basement and a street with soldier’s houses, this fortress still breathes the spirit of a 18th century soldiers’ village. There is something to do for young and old in the castle, the outer baily and the soldier’s village.
In the museum you learn about Hugo the Great, the Middle ages and the Dutch Waterline. With different activities you’ll learn more about powder and weapons and in the basement, you can experience highwater. There are guides present in the castle who can tell you stories at set times.
