CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WATER LINE
The Dutch Water line has a length of 85 km and runs from the town ‘Muiden’ to nature park ‘Biesbosch’. The line exists of 50 forts, 2 castles, 6 fortress towns, 85 casemates for machine guns, 700 shelters and 100 military locks and watermarks.
FUNCTION OF THE WATERLINIE
The name says it all: The water line is a defense mechanism that is based on water. In times of war, the areas of land were flooded on purpose. In the way, area affected became too deep for the infantry soldiers and vehicles and too shallow for the boats. This made the West of The Netherlands impassable for the French and the German soldiers.
Since July 2021, De Hollandse Waterlinie has been added to the World Heritage List. More information can be found at: www.unesco.nl/nl/artikel/unesco-plaatst-waterlinies-op-werelderfgoedlijst
