FEATURES OF WATER LINE
The Dutch Water Line is 85 kilometers long and runs from Muiden to the Biesbosch. The line consists of about 50 forts, 2 castles, 6 fortresses, 85 machine gun casemates, 700 shelters, and 100 military locks and waterworks.
FUNCTION OF THE WATER LINE
The name Waterline says it all: it is a defense mechanism based on water. In times of war, areas within the Waterline were intentionally flooded. The flooded area became too deep for infantry and vehicles and too shallow for ships. This way, during the war, West Netherlands became impassable for the French and the Germans.
