ORIGIN OF LOEVESTEIN CASTLE
Located in a unique spot in the Netherlands between the rivers Maas and Waal, Knight Dirc Loef van Horne had his castle built here around 1361 due to its strategic location for collecting tolls. In 1572, the castle was used as a state prison, and later became part of the Hollandic Water Line.
THE STORY OF HUGO DE GROOT
Did you know that Slot Loevestein was once the setting for a sensational historical event? During the period when the castle served as a state prison, Hugo de Groot was serving a life sentence here. He had been imprisoned for two years when he escaped on March 22, 1621... in a book chest! His brilliant escape is vividly recounted at the castle.
